People hate the idea of being monitored until they use a search engine that doesn’t track them and their results are worse and their newsfeed/social media algorithms don’t bang and their IT problems are proactively solved etc etc.

I’m kinda convinced that the only thing users of average tech literacy hate more than the idea of being watched is the consequences of not being watched.
I generally don’t like my online activity being watched either, to be clear, but it seems that in convenience becoming the norm online the expectations people have for their platforms and digital services currently require this kind of surveillance to be realized.
