It's like normcore for personal websites. The clean minimalism works nicely on its own but isn't successful at standing out among all the other sites using this template/layout. Maybe it's a flex that their work history speaks for itself, so the website doesn't have to.
totally agree with the site being minimal to highlight the work/history itself! personally i admire the attention to details (typeface, spacing, colours); the minimalist design exposes and magnifies all those details if you're not super attentive!
