After the Spotify update, while the Now-Playing Panel cannot be completely hidden, you can now also bring up the search bar using ⌘ + K.

I looked it up - it turns out the quick search functionality using ⌘ + K has been there all along; Spotify is just now displaying this shortcut on the search bar itself.
