The designers at AirBnB must be exhausted trying to find UI hacks to make people feel like they're getting a deal and not being hit with unexpected fees.

Don't know thinking behind, but from user pov, it feels like the product of "Let's throw all the numbers we can, some green elements for discounts, so users will not bother to analyze all and think it is a deal".
