If Apple sold us all on postmodern minimalism, is there space for a kitschy, lived-in, highly usable aesthetic for the internet? If this photo were a service on the internet, what is it?
none specific – with every recipe website i visit i scroll until i find the “print recipe” button (all of them have one) and then use a PDF of the recipe. to extend the analogy in the image, it’s like walking into someone else’s kitchen and looking for the silverware drawer lol
i feel like the kitschy, lived-in vibe comes from pretty poorly designed platforms that get customized a bunch by creators. but it’s pretty highly usable because all of these sites are roughly laid out the same way
Love this! The “poorly designed” but get “customized” nails it. Makes me wonder if it’s actually poorly designed or if it’s a design that’s maybe just unintentionally been given room to evolve? There isn’t much customization these days and that feels like the key ingredient
