Brand Designer, Creative, and all-around Geek 🤓 I'm Bruno but most friends call me Figas.

TL;DR: Currently working as Designer in Chief at OutSystems, growing communities as a Figma Community Advocate, and fighting for #OpenDesign with Design is for Everyone.

I started my career freelancing for cultural projects and small businesses, but even before that, I was introduced to design through computerized textile design in my family's business. Then for 6 years I grew and developed cultural projects around music, co-directing an online magazine called Culturarte and eventually organizing music shows through Sofar Sounds.

Since 2016 I've been working at OutSystems, a visual coding platform company, helping the company brand and design practices to grow and scale. I am now leading a team of creatives and trying to grow a truly global design organization. On the side I've been helping grow the Figma Community, handling the Portuguese chapter, and helping with the moderation of both the slack and forum channels.

My most recent side-project is called Design is for Everyone, DifE for short. In this project, I'm going to fight for a more democratized and open practice of our profession, building several assets from podcasts, interviews, and videos, to free design courses and even an attempt at a worldwide census of the state of Design as a profession. All of this in the name of #opendesign.

Also about me: Marvel/Star Wars geek, lover of indie, alt, and soul music and a truly annoying know it all.

This is such a concrete suggestion! You’re right, I do feel cringe to promote myself, thinking it’s inappropriate that I somehow feel conceited haha. I’ll definitely practice more and eventually become comfortable telling people what I’m great at

You’re not alone. My role ends in 3 months and I feel this way while looking. That’s with 12 years of experience.

It always feels cringy to say something you don't fully believe, so when you take the time to practise stressful scenarios, you'll slowly but surely get unshakeable conviction of your strengths while realizing and accepting your weaknesses. And then you can properly address them!

Exactly! It would be a shame not to continue what you’ve worked for, just because you aren’t confident for things that you know you deserve. That’s very brilliant input from you! Thanks for that 🥹

here's something that will help no matter what: practice interviewing. ask a friend and let them ask you tough questions. the best thing about it: you'll cringe, but you'll get better and more concise at describing yourself, and through this, more confident in your abilities!

i feel you! i think it’s self-doubt vs self-awareness. as long as we’re aware that there are always more things to learn and improve on, then we’re good! if you doubt yourself, it’s a loss before the battle starts!!! - me (a career transitioner looking for a job too!)

Not sure about you field man, but you are not alone. Been there as most of us here. My advice would be to trust your training and the experience gathered already to inform you were you are lacking and seek the opportunities to fill in those gaps

Ya I’m so surprised realising so many people actually resonate with me in this. I believe everyone is doing great in their journey ,just believing in ourselves is something that we need to grasp.

I often experience anxiety about not being able to secure a job after I graduate (graduation is in half a year). I consistently doubt my skills and capabilities. Can anyone relate? I wonder if it’s a personal struggle or a shared experience.

Also, straight out of college nobody is going to look at you for a senior level of independence. It is expected of you to have doubts and explore your field. People expect you to know next to nothing. That’s a really good place to start

But with 12 years of experience, I can already tell you’re doing great! How do you consistently cope with that?

Everyone goes through this, even if they didn’t do school. You’re not alone. 

But I’ve seen a lot of people just… stop doing stuff when they don’t have a professor or a boss. 

Even if you don’t get something right away, keep making stuff and eventually someone will catch on!

I would say that’s a shared issue. Specially if you, like me and many others didn’t have the best connection to the job market pre-graduation.

I know right! Tbh it’s more like a self-sabotaging process in my case, sometimes I feel like settling for less. But deep down, we do know we deserve better. It’s just so arduous to come up to realisation that we’re actually great at our work and we just need to be confident.

Oh no! You’re doing great if you don’t know that! 10-year-plus-experience isn’t a walk in the park, you must have gained a lot from it ☺️ Fighting!

In my experience, being open and forthcoming about your doubts is always the best tool to have. A mentor I had once told me that nobody can teach you hunger for knowledge, so if you have it, wield the hell out of it.

I’m in a coding field, just it makes me insecure to go for the first job, thinking I’m underprepared or to be exact, not knowing what to equip. That indeed adds insult to injury
