Got it ok yeah, delivering the basics. Is that an economy thing or a “we don’t believe in design” thing from where you’re sitting?

Can you elaborate on what “smaller choices” means?

A lot of places and people are just not in need of our services and help. And that’s okay.

…I believe as artists, creatives, thinkers, and people, we deserve time to understand that these are new times and that means you have to consider what has to go into new ways of living.

The job market and culture is becoming a 5am-9pm labor of love more and more…

I hear you. I feel sad for what used to feel like such an exciting and hopeful profession (and still largely does to me). If young people aren't being excited by it and are turning away I fear for the vitality of our ideas.

An example might be a reduction in animation and other delightful design elements, resulting in a simpler, more functional user experience.  The emphasis shifts from aesthetics and user delight to delivering core business value.

…And the best thing that is out there for our capable minds and talents, is to engage and practice more than just servitude. It’s to find a job that makes sense for you.

urgh that's a tough spot. Time to move on?

Product designers don’t need to do anything.

It’s okay to explore what’s best for our futures. The industry is becoming a competitive black hole, taking time out of people’s lives to be “strong and flexible”. When there are just too many people asking for validation…

…I personally, am really proud and prepared to move forward and find new opportunities in Product Design. And yet, I know that my values, cultural makeup, and experience all make it important to practice advocating for sustainable versions of success…

I hear you. I’m at a point with my current job where ironically I’ve never felt more capable to do more powerful craftsmanship and    yet see the limits of business. 

I’m a UX & Web Developer, yet all my decisions and thoughts on intuitive and accessible design are ignored…

I think the economy is pushing companies toward smaller choices, a trend I've observed before in my 20+ year career. Give it time. Continue working for the user, and things will change again.

In my opinion, it's the economy. Two wars are at risk of escalation while the world continues to recover from COVID. AI is causing major industry shifts. This isn't about us, but designers, like many others, are impacted. Take a breath, and continue doing the best work you can.

Oh for sure lol working on the portfolio as we speak 😂

The prevailing mood amongst product designers right now is
- Annoyed
- Bored
- Considering leaving the profession

The current mood is putting off a lot of young designers from entering the industry and pushing existing designers out.

What do we do?

…The client is always right. And that’s a mentality of business that’s attractive to a lot of more people than high paying creatives are willing to admit on a podcast lol…
