i wfh in honolulu year round and work from the sf office 10-20 days of the year out of choice not obligation

wfh means i work longer hours and give better quality hours

Is it irreplaceable? Like, is there some fundamental truth about the universe that makes it only possible in a shared physical space?

Commuting is wasted time going to an office to sit in an environment you have little control over with headphones on to focus 

At home I get to be there for my kids before and after school, I can freely exercise on my lunch break, I manage my own time and save money

start every day at 4:30a, standup at 6a, surf at 7a, code at 11a, finish between 5-7p i’m typically giving 8.5-10.5 quality hours a day

i'm not sure how anyone gets any work work done in the office but i find the irl connections irreplaceable

— Irreplaceable loss of daily ambient context from colleagues
— Every single video call software is a piece of shit

Plus:
— 8.51am alarm, coffee ready by 8.57. “Hey can you hear me” at 9.01

Only good side that I see is doing healthy amount of steps that I didn’t do working from home (and got some weight). I see no other benefit. Colleagues are not friends and I prefer socializing with friends and family.

Commuting to an office 1hr each way for 250 days in a year equals about 500 hours = 20 days (or 62 work days) that you're not paid for.

Remote work can be really productive and effective if done right.

I interviewed with multiple companies recently and all had in person work. We all hoped remote is new normal. Seems companies are steering away from that. Good times are behind it seems.

Yes. Or no, it’s also possible to do in an Online Space, but neither Slack, Zoom, Teams, whatever fun remote quiz Kahoot the HR person set sets up on Fridays, are online SPACES. They’re just people doing networked computer stuff

After 3.5 workplaces doing some sort of shitty-ass non-governed hybrid thing (which has sucked 100% of the time a 100% of the places), my truly unironic answer to what every org should shift to, is getmibo.com

A pro for me in the office is that I like hanging out with my colleagues, but this can also be a negative depending on your team & company.

A nice bike ride into the city /
I can walk along the waterfront during the day while I think / I can collaborate in real time in multiple spaces in the office with the team / free food and drinks / free heating / my doggo is welcome
