Good question. The first times are stressful, it’s a new environment and your high heart rate makes you spend more energy than necessary. My tip is to swim in open water more often, specially with different conditions so that you build resilience and your brain relaxes
The other thing that made a big difference was learning to check where I am by looking forwards from time to time. Find a landmark in the general direction you are going, and check it every ~10 strokes. Ensuring that you are going in the right direction is essencial
The bright buoy gave me extra confidence. Knowing that people can see me while I’m swimming gave me extra relaxation
I still have loads to improve and that’s why I try not to skim pool days to improve my form. Swimming is hard 😬
