As an engineering team lead I had my first across management discussion with a principal engineer for not sticking to what we had agreed. It’s certainly easier managing downward to my direct reports. Managing across is as they’re effectively the same level of authority.

I imagine that managing upwards is even harder and more awkward. Thankfully I report to the director, and he’s pretty relaxed. I’m growing and learning each day when it comes to professional communication and I look up to the director as he always puts things across so smoothly
