Billy McFerland was my client once. He still owes me money. Fyre fest guy.
Tell me (or everyone here) a fun story from your past as a designer 🗣️ I’ll go first: In 2011 the CEO of Stripe asked me if I wanted to come on board as the 2nd(?) designer. I told him thanks, but nah… I was working on stuff I loved. 🤦♂️
Things turned out pretty great for me.. but that woulda been a whole other level of “great” lol
I needed this thread. Thank you so much. Just seeing you’ve all done these same retrospective oops. I have similar where I turned down Airbnb head of design in 2010 and they instead got one of our more junior engineers, joe, who turned out to be an amazing leader for the company.
However I’m proud to say I’ve been turning Facebook down since 2005 pre-Julie and they can still fuck off into the sun
Here’s me ghosting WhatsApp in 2012 😭 I was an arrogant dumb shit designer still, clinging to my mint.com success, who thought it wouldn’t be a good place to work because the app was ugly
when I was 13/14, Google reached out to me for an interview. I purchased CS books, studied up, and was so excited. you can imagine my disappointment when the recruiter realized my age and had to break the news that they weren’t going to be able to continue with the process. 🥲
A few years ago, I came very close to landing a job at Shopify, but I was denied since I lived in a country they were unable to employ me in and the role didn't allow for relocation due to the level of seniority. 🤦♂️🥺
Is recent past relevant? One of my last design interviews in November resulted in feedback about not having experience with “complex b2b flows.” The last ten years of my life is b2b software only. It’s what I literally specialize in.
