Testing YouTube setups. Any videographers over here got any lighting advice?

What’s your setup now. Looks like natural window light and a ring light?

Bingo. I am trying to do what I can with what I have.

It really depends on the style you want. I like this setup but I’d say look for some type of soft box to put over the ring light. There’s a lot of diy ways to do it too. There’s a lot of simple setup tutorials on YT

Ah that’s a great idea — to soften the ring light! I hear you — yeah I’m not super sure yet what I’m going for. The American turned British YouTuber Evan Edinger always has some very unique and pleasant setups. I like that it looks natural yet still feels intentional.

both these setups are achievable on a budget. You just need to create some depth in your frame. Both shots have 3 things in common. They’re shooting into the corner of the room, using lamps/bg lights to motivate the key light, and negative fill (deep shadow on the side of face).

With your frame, angle the ring light about 45degrees towards your window, that’s your motivating light for now. Add some negative fill to the shadow side and you’ll be good to start. Later you can ass bg lifting or you can thrift some bow
