It does seem like it's somehow still an A/B test so either they're bringing it back or they're using it for individuals who aren't very engaged.

I (practically) designed this. Related pins are the highest performing parts of the closeup view on Pinterest. Before, they were far below the fold and by making them more prominent, you increase engagement by (IIRC) double digit percentages.

uhh, i essentially built a Pinterest-like (really a FFFFOUND-like) as my senior thesis in college, then I got an internship at Facebook where the Pinterest cofounder was working on it in his spare time, and then joined as the first design hire once I graduated the following year.

I love how these types of decisions are made based on metrics ❤️. On the other hand, I'm more into focusing on the pin I'm on, I don't know, I'm from the tumblr era hahs

While I was there, it wasn't shipped because the cofounder didn't think it looked good. But, double digit metric lifts are hard to deny.
