Are there any designers in the Bay Area that would be interested in starting something to explore/practice design beyond the approaches we might typically take in the tech industry?
Here’s some context to supplement this question:
I finished 'Designing Design' by Kenya Hara this year, and it demonstrated a juxtaposition to how I was brought into design—specifically digital product design. At a high-level, we tend to employ ideas of design thinking to identify problems that address revenue-based goals.
Compare that against some of the philosophies and work depicted in Hara's book, wherein he and other designers explore ideas based on how they activate our senses…
Anyway, I think it could be fun to start a design club, for lack of a better term, that explores our discipline in ways that likely aren’t encouraged in our day jobs. And I think it’d be great to start that with some other similarly-curious folks!
Starting to gather some interest! If you'd like to join in on something like this, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Side note: I specified the Bay Area b/c I think there are some advantages afforded by being in-person, but things are still pretty open right now! Say hi!
