As a self-declared amateur, try looking at other people's photography and picking out what makes the photo so good. Also, take lots of pictures, even of things around your house, and see what feels off about them, and try correcting that. I've found it's a lot of practice

Well yeah. it's stuff you see every day. It's being able to take that boring stuff, and look at it through a different lens (pun absolutely intended) that makes it more interesting and fun. And since it's your own home, you get effectively infinite tries at it!
