ive seen two approaches to breaking down an end goal or project into sub-tasks/sub-goals/sub-skills: (1) so focused on the end, that every step is seen as an obstacle, and (2) see each step on the way as a goal itself, treating it as acquiring a sub-skill.

the latter is happier.
