A good manager is like a coach who anticipates threats a player on their team could face and proactively alert them so that they can avoid and win. A bad manager is like a referee who reactively catches errors and penalizes a player for not playing by the rules.

A lot of parents conflate unconditional love and unconditional rewarding. Children must be loved unconditionally but rewarding them for every little thing they do will reduce their desire for competency/curiosity/growth.

It’s important to keep your motivated, high-performing employees (positively) challenged. Giving them tasks/projects that they find easy/ ‘doable’ could run the risk of making them feel bored and lose interest in the job.

The most common mistake I see designers make is they always make it an ux-vs-product/eng game. That causes friction and tension in the team. Instead, make it a ux+product+eng-vs-problem and there will be a lot less stress and more fun.
