Finally upgrading my laptop after 11 years, and I'm already dreading having to transfer over my typeface collection.

The sky is clear, shops have their doors up, bikes are out in the streets - a wonderful “February Fakeout” day here in Portland.

All sorts of layoffs in my team today, and the writing on the wall is in big bold letters. Guess it’s time for me to get back on the job hunt.

UI design is, at times, similar to painting stage scenery. Sometimes you have to make really bold choices that look less-than-stellar up close, in order to get the right effect from far away (or, ya know, on a device screen)

Aaaaand, the other shoe has finally dropped. Contract ends next Friday without renewal. Feeling a bit nervous, but also hopeful at the chance to job hunt and re-discover my creativity without having a job that was burning me out!

This is a bit of an informal survey, but I’m curious - when faced with a learning curve for a new hobby,  how were you able to stay interested/find enjoyment in it?

Okay, hoping our collective memory can help here. What is the site that features a bunch of different bitmap-y filters that you can play around with? I want to say it had a kinda swiss/minimal look to it? I think it made the rounds 2-3 months ago.

Just accepted an offer to be Chief of Design on a new project! 

(Was this “offer” a text from a friend and collaborator? Yes. Are both of our roles unpaid until we get funding? Also yes. But it feels great to have something to work on!)

I see people talking about the Arc announcement, but I’ve been over here freaking out about F1 announcements all morning.

I truly believe that AI imaging tools are the enemy of creative labor. These companies claim their tech is “democratizing” creativity, but it will ultimately be used to devalue our work in order to boost profits we will never see, like so many automation technologies before them.

REALLY digging and highly recommend Scavengers Reign if you're a sci-fi fan. An extremely compelling story set in a truly bizarre alien world.  The writing and animation are gorgeous, giving it the feel of a cool indie comic. (Also a must watch for any Moebius fans)

I know Figma is saying “it gives you the most obvious solution” as an attempt to keep people from worrying about the Make Design feature, but what any of these AI tools have shown is that lots of people are fine with the the obvious solution if it means paying people less.

I know it’s early days, but I truly hope we see some grand innovations with Vision Pro instead to just flat menus floating in space. 

I’d love to see a messaging app in the form of a stack of letters that you open, a podcasting app in the form of a radio with dials, etc.

Loving to cook is such a scam.

It’s like, oh great I feel fulfilled by cooking myself and loved ones delicious meals imbued with warmth and love, only to be left with a bunch of dishes to clean. 

Why can’t I be one of those people fine with drinking Soylent for every meal!?

Just introduced my students to WCAG and now I’m ready for a nap.

Had an extremely surreal moment a few weeks ago when Ron McElhenney and the Wrexham AFC Women’s team were gifted scarves that I designed! Been working on allowing myself to feel proud about my design accomplishments, and this was a pretty big one!

I quite like my Frame TV, but hate that Samsung switched to a subscription model for its art collection. So the logical choice was creating and uploading my own art.

So I’ll be rooting for the Dodgers, and while there are so many reasons I could give as to why - I hate the Yankees, Shohei finally getting a chance, etc. - as a designer there is only one reason, and it’s this:

Illustrator's ability to be juuuuuuuuust a little bit off while claiming to be aligned is actually really impressive, if you think about it.

Starting to develop carpal tunnel, which means I should switch to an ergo keyboard and mouse. 

The bright side is that there is no longer the threat of me spending too much money on cool mechanical keyboards.

Apple talking a lot about how much Intel MacBook Pro users should finally upgrade. 

But the real question is - how much will my 2013 machine with missing keys and nonexistent battery life get me at trade in??

Already seeing people talking about Christmastime. You will drag me into winter holidays kicking and screaming while I hold onto my decorative autumnal gourds for dear life. It is TOO early!
