yeah there are certainly existing apps that do part of this like calibre zotero devonthink, but they are either less open (proprietary format/need to import) or way too complex or have a pretty dated look

ah, i think i see now. however i think it might still be the best option out there. its open source, has those functionalities, also you could set up a self hosted server for yourself with it if thats your vibe. but - i gotta agree the UI is lacking in terms of modernness lol

👀 once the pdfs/epubs are imported into the obsidian-esque tool and stored local on disk, what is it that you want to do with the pdfs/epubs?

i think i just want a nice interface to organize/read all my papers & books without sacrificing data interoperability. so nothing crazy to start with: tagging, full-text searching(ocr), basic annotation, rich metadata etc. but defo lots of room for imagination there eg ai/plugins
