I make web software that requires servers and I improve it every day. The most sustainable biz model is subscriptions.

But bad actors taint the model, so I'm thinking of:
- emailed weekly backup files
- a lifetime plan ($2.5x~ yearly)
- open-sourcing the client app

If you're like me, one of the first things you do when creating a new space is picking *juuust* the right background. Generated backgrounds make getting started off right a lot easier.

Better Code Blocks [New]

When you paste code into cards between ```triple backticks```, your code will get syntax highlighting. You can either type the language name after the backticks (```js), or select it manually.

Handy for saving code snippets and in engineering diagrams.

What's Uno? What's Octa? 

*Looks up Uno, turns out it was a VC funded app with a pretty design that I never used because it was VC funded and had no business plan. 

Glad I dodged that bullet.*

I got to see (and secretly touch) one of these vintage B&O HiFI systems at a design museum in Denmark. I love inviting, tactile interfaces that make you feel like you already know how to use something just by looking at.

Instruments and tools are how I understand and contextual use the world.

After investigating/trying out client-side vs server-side code syntax highlighting approaches, I think server-side is the way to go. 

Neither solution is perfect, but server-side makes the most sense overall in this case, and design is about tradeoffs.

Got a great suggestion that led me to macrolight, a ~2kb super basic syntax/keyword highlighter. This made me rethink my whole approach. 

Syntax highlighting in Kinopio doesn't need vscode-level accuracy – speed matters more here.

My current plan for syntax highlighting in code blocks to get the server to do it, which will let me support all languages and keep the web app small – but getting this to work nicely is kind of a magic act. 

Obvious from the outside = labyrinth on the inside

To take less attention from your content, UI buttons blend into the background. 

However, if you prefer high contrast buttons without any translucency, you can toggle that in `User → Settings → Controls → Increase UI Contrast`

What paid apps do you use that are also open source? (if any?)

Card Dragging Performance Up [Update]

In a complex space, moving cards could skip frames and go out of sync with the connection lines. Today's release significantly improves performance and smoothness

Whenever I need to debate with myself whether a business decision is right, I ask myself "what would Adobe *not* do?". That's usually the right way to go.

WIP: When you try and drag a connection label beyond it's possible range a glowy border line is revealed

Working on connection line and label improvements today. 
First fix: labels stay visible while dragging

Bigger Code Blocks [New]

To accommodate larger code snippets, cards with ``` triple backticks can hold more characters (2000). 

Combined with the new syntax highlighting, Kinopio makes it easy to give code context in reference diagrams and decision trees.
