How would it work if your mouse enters or leaves from top, right or left?

No difference, the hover would work the same in both instances, regardless of where the mouse comes in from.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the hover stare always slides in from the opposite direction your mouse enters? I think that would really make it come alive!

I agree. The first option looks like a switch. It feels like the inside variant has changed. That's why I'm in favor of the second option.

Background only. The text wiping would make more sense if it changes.

Left one just feels smoother but I’m too busy so the right one has to win 🤷‍♂️

both are cool but i prefer the right one because the moving text on the left disorients my reading
