Take-home tests are a scourge on our industry
I really don't like "speculative" design, I find it like games you played where you were a kid where you just made up rules, and could change them at will. Also doing a take-home test on some speculative designer right now =/
They can be a useful tool for helping understanding how someone approaches their craft & fairness purposes. Some of our design disciplines will ask you to bring an artifact of your own to talk us through it; our content team does have an exercise but it's designed to be short
I've probably ranted about design tests on at least a dozen or so threads just on Posts alone — it's just my opinion.. I'm not looking for a debate
Very interesting. Could you explain more about what speculative design means?
Speculative design has its place, especially in the classroom or on projects where getting buried in the weeds isn't super helpful. I would agree that if you're being assigned a speculative design project for a take-home test for a job, that's trash.
