This is my goal with Font Awesome 😬🤞🏻
I’d like to be at a job for a long time. Like a really long time. My dad has had two jobs since I was born, the second being his last before retirement. It feels like like the only way to do that is with a private company, shareholders fuck everything up.
I really wish this was the norm. Now it feels like it hinders job security. They’ll think you only know how to solve problems for your last specific company. It’s dumb.
I haven’t run into that but I wouldn’t be surprised if teams with extremely rigid processes are like that
I think it’s more an issue for people who work a long time at very large companies. It’s an issue for people who spend too much time in a FAANG/adjacent company. I see it come up often.
I hate that switching companies seems to be the norm in our industry in order to level up. “Want a promotion? Quit your job and start somewhere new!” It’s so… unnecessary.
It's shortsighted. Stick around and get that barely CoL increase and possibly a promotion, or bounce and make 20% more with more responsibility? Companies forget the cost of onboarding - retaining and respecting your talent > feeding attrition and hiring someone new
side note, I’m not really interested in working for myself or by myself. Maybe that’ll change but right now I need friends! Collaborators! Creative people to learn from!
Still at The Score? How has your time there been? Would you stay there long term? I have a buddy there on design systems team, seems to like it enough!
Ahh who? I love everyone on the DS team 💖 I have some goals I’d like to hit and theScore definitely seems committed to my growth for now… so we’ll see
Longest gig I’ve had has been a contract that keeps getting extended, otherwise it’s no longer than 18 mos 🫠
My longest gig I was basically around pre-retired people and then academia. I wouldve stayed in tech places forever but I got laid off 🤡
Totally get that feeling! I was sincerely planning for Twitter to have been this kind of role for me. Buuuut 🙃
without a doubt, the absolute best thing that could have happened! Hoping to share a lot more soon about how it's all gone, and hope to encourage others who might be interested in exploring being independent!
