I worked on a team of all strategists and researchers as a sole product designer
There’s a lot of designers here so I wanna test something out! 👀 Have you worked / collaborated with a “Strategist” before? Or are you like “wth is that?”
Wow I’ve usually found it to be the other way around! I’m usually the only strategist in a team of designers. That’s awesome. Curious how that experience was for you
Yes!! The agency I’m at has three main branches: strategy, design, tech. From my experience, strategy 🤝 design and we’re constantly bouncing back and forth off each other
Of course. The combination is wonderful in brand work. The ingredients to the recipe.
Our studio doesn’t do any design work without strategy. It’s critical to success IMO
I have, only once. Jury’s out. Despite him being a great person and fun to work with, I didn’t understand what he added beyond what the more senior designers on the team added.
Sorry to hear it wasn’t a fruitful experience for you. 😅 hope that doesn’t deter you from working with other strategists! Every strategist is different and brings different pov
I’ve worked with some good ones and have played that role for various phases of my design career. In my case, a mix of generative research, opportunity finding, concept validation, etc. and it gave me valuable skills and perspectives I’ve taken into my end to end design practice.
Probably where that landed for me was in understanding how the pieces come together in product definition and planning, and how all that overlaps with biz / market strategy and bet-making.
I have. In my experience the strategist has typically been a function of the research team, but they apply findings to prototypes or vision narratives. Output has more or less been concept design.
I do both. I don’t think it’s really possible to separate design from strategy.
