it was hard even before manufacturers other than cherry and gateron became mainstays. *generally* reds are light and linear, browns have a soft tactility, and blues are clicky & loud. anything else probably needs a google haha (or maybe the specs are somewhere else on the page?)
My biggest point of friction when shopping for keyboards is having no idea the difference between switch types. Red, blue, brown, or whatever rainbow of options inherent to the category.
I’m astounded that nobody has thought to display a small caption, or info icon, next to each switch to provide additional context to customers. Or even to organize them into loudest to quietest. It just seems obvious.
For what it’s worth, Keychron has some switch guides in their blog. keychron.com/search?q=switc…
I had the same issue and went hunting on YouTube. Lot of chaff in there, but there are some decent vids that give you audio apples to apples (I find even the various written descriptions hard to parse).
I’ve begun letting local friends check boards and switches out of my “library” for this very reason 😅
