People don't understand or don't care. We should all be using Mastodon or some other decentralized platform because we should have learned these lessons, but the creature comforts of centralized networks have most people's brains rotting.

I think that also goes for the people who make the app. If they weren’t data greedy, a centralized network would work.

It would not. Facebook isn’t the core problem, capitalism is. Any social network given enough time and users is incentivized to do if not the same thing, very similar ones

A subscription base model, without ads, and privacy focused might work.

The average person is not going to pay money for a social networking site

Instagram, something you and I (and many others who are concerned about this) use is also a data-mining monster. The data linked to you is the same. I’m glad that Threads is making people more aware of stuff like this, but check the apps you’re already using. It’s not new.

And I’m not saying it’s right. Not at all. More people need to realize that we are always the product when it comes to big tech and shouldn’t be that shocking. It’s also unfortunate that US privacy laws are essentially non-existent, especially for consumers.

well said. well said.

We are still dealing with siloed algorithms feeding news based on people’s data—real and fake.

apps.apple.com/gb/app/glass-p…

‎Glass - Photography Community
‎Glass is your home for photography. Available on iPhone, iPad, and the Web, Glass is a photo sharing app and community. We’re private and member-supported. We don’t have ads, engagement algorithms, invasive data tracking, outside investors, or public counts. Really. We mean it. No ads. No algorithms…

Actually it’s well expected given this is just another data mining app from meta

It is just play of words! Like FB was never meant to be Social Network and WhatsApp a chat app, Threads is data-mining and surveillance+control product marketed as 'whatever they say it is'. Because they know it is words that people trust and by words they play human minds!

Yeah exactly well said. Reminds me of the famous quote, “If a product/service claims to be free (forever), most likely you (as a user) are the product itself.”

what are the best alternatives for you guys then?

Literally this app.

One thing I was thinking about this, is actually that’s just them getting their “potential” data permissions out there early. This won’t instantly give them access, as the OS will ask you if you want to share each of these permissions.

It means that they don’t need to change data information data down the line. Not saying I trust them, but it would make obvious business sense at their scale to do this.

Wondering what Sensitive Info is. Agree to your statement. A central user-owned identity that's borrowed by services (vs. owning it) is yet to go mainstream...

Nothing is ever free. Those are the same data mining methods on instagram. 😬

Yes it’s horrible. Instagram has the same privacy label. TikTok might be the worst at data tracking though. Appreciate the Cambridge Analytica call out- they got Trump elected- one of the worst things to happen to America. Surprised how many people aren’t aware of this.

David Mendes

Well, if you look it up on the App Store, Instagram collects exactly the same amount of data. Threads seems to be built on top of Instagram.

No matter the platform - Facebook, Google, Apple, or any other - privacy is non-existent 🥲

I see more and more products following this path, “we are not going to sell your data tu make revenue, but you are going to pay a subscription to allow us to offer this product” and tbh I don’t see anything wrong with it.
