if i knew how to code, i would not rely on an external company's products to make my website, but that's just me

+1. Mine is just html and css, because I don’t really want to rely on a company/platform for something this “personal”. But then again I always loved building random shit on my website since like 2000 when I had to ftp files to my server sooo that’s just me 🙈

I have a fairly negative opinion of builder services in general because the time you invest in learning their tools, you could learn how to code and not get your knowledge wiped out by a redesign, or price increases, or acquisitions.

I ditched Squarespace at the beginning of this year for exactly those reasons. My site’s not great, but I built it myself and know why it works.

Yeah those are some really good points. We actually use squarespace for our company website at work (lol) and the amount of time I spent figuring out the ins and outs of squarespace I could have just built the whole thing from scratch and tbh much better 🙃

I prefer to code it myself on a platform that I end up working with devs on (ergo, React). Besides, I don't want to have my personal site just as a portfolio to show recruiters. I would like to also build it as a playground, and try a few things that I don't get to do at work.
