Hi, everyone! 👋 I’m Joey, and I live in Columbus, Ohio, with my wife Kristen and our dog Ellie! I’m over at Webflow, working on our team’s design system, and enjoy teaching others about Figma. I’ve got a love for biking, sustainability, and connecting with others within design!
Hey y’all! Can we get an #introductions thread going? (Also, search doesn’t work for posts so I couldn’t scroll far back to see if any was created) There’s many new and familiar faces, and it’s cool to see so many great types of designers all together. Share some stuff!
Cuuuuuute 😍 I, and I think everyone here, appreciate all the things you do for the design community. Been so cool to follow your progress from twitter to webflow! I bet you’re learning so much over there haha
Aww thanks, Darian! I really appreciate you saying that. 🤗 Yes, Webflow is um, so much less dramatic without a hostile takeover happening as you’re trying to work.
😅 I ended up with a new design VP in the middle of my team being activated and felt like it put us in limbo for a few months. Not as hostile, but I can relate with thinking how the heck can I be focused rn. So yeah, I understand. Glad to see you made it out in time tho 😆
Hey all! I’m Darian. I’m a self taught designer in the Portland Or area. Originally a freelancer as a side hustle, I worked my tail off in brand identity design for websites and eventually converted to doing design systems for product for big corps.
I’m a huge design nerd, and love talking about it. But outside of my work, I like to tinker and make things… art, robots, 3d printing, comics, and all sorts of creative stuff. Basically, I just want to study and learn all the cool and interesting things out there What about you?
I’m working on getting them posted publicly. Trying to figure out a good format, whether it’s a site for it, or through Instagram. It’s a comic that i want to have a homage to the space western genre I love so much. The only part I have on my phone rn is a background
Oooh Space Western! Excellent! Hmu if you ever wanna talk hosting - I ran in the webcomics circle for years and I have thoughts I’m happy to share about how to best put comics up online! 😄
Hi everyone! I’m Emily - I used to write comic books before becoming a product designer! I love making friends with crows, snowshoeing, all things Star Wars, and taking photos of Maine! Always looking for both fun things to work on! embirdportfolio.com
Hey everyone 👋! I’m Stef and I’m new to Product Design and absolutely loving the journey into design so far! In my spare time, I love to do flower arrangements, play indie games and hiking!
I would love to see your flower arrangements some day, Stef!! I forgot to tell you, my wife is certified in Ikebana and she does flower arrangements in our house from time to time!
That’s awesome! I have a Kenzan but it’s so hard, I broke so many flowers 😂 Here’s some of my floral work stephaniebruce.co/blooms/
Thank you Darian! I learnt a lot about colour theory with flowers - has become very handy for product design!
Having worked remotely for the last while it really feels like I don’t actually know any designers in Vancouver 🥲
Hey all! I’m Nikhil, UX manager at Workato, building out the Platform design and design systems teams. Been here since 2018 when I joined as the second full-time designer. I get really excited about Design systems, interaction design and motion design!
Same here, I’ve been on the system side for both product and brand and could talk about this stuff for hours. How have you seen the design system grow through your tenure there?
Nice! Yeah I caught a bit of your work over on Design Twitter. When I started we had a 1-page style guide. Now we’re a larger team (5 product designers), and have a mostly complete Ui kit (with barely any docs), and it’s partially code-synced. Long way to go 😅
Haha it’s always a journey. That’s cool though that you have that many designers on it. I’ve always been a sole effort for the ones I’ve worked on. So it’s good that some companies do staff it out.
Oh haha no no, we’re 5 designers on the design team total. Just me and one other designer on the design system 😅
Hey Dantley! Good to see you here (: I didn’t get a chance to say hi last year coming out of Nike, but I hope things are good on the design front there. It was left in good hands with you, Hayley, Sophie, and Samia! Cheers to you and your fam (:
Whattup, y’all! I’m Jeff! Senior Product Designer. Been with Automattic since 2014 working on things like WordPress.com & Jetpack. I love to photograph the stars and landscapes when I’m not at my computer! (Thanks for starting this Darian)
Yeah! That’s awesome, you’ve been there the whole 9 years? A good contrast to all the job hopping I’ve gone through with freelance and contracts. Haha I haven’t gotten into photography yet, but I imagine those pics you take look mighty cool.
Hi everyone. I‘m Yasin, 36, happily married, 5yo son, end of May a daughter, fullstack dev that enjoys frontend more in the last years. Currently working for a local company and searching for a new job. I used to design around 15 years ago, now it’s my blog and side projects.
Congrats on the new baby, Yasin! It’s good to see a full stack dev that enjoys front end work. Haha, I always seem to run into the opposite. But having multiple disciplines under your belt can never hurt when it comes to trying to communicate more on what needs done (:
Thank you Darian. Can’t wait for my little girl. After our son was born, we had 2 miscarriages so my wife and I are pretty scared but thank god our little girl is healthy and everything looks good.
I have 3 kiddos myself, and just went through a recent miscarriage. It’s not fun, but I’m glad to hear that things are better this time around.
So sorry to hear that Darian. My son helped me and my wife through all of that, because he is such a happy and open minded kid.
Hey! I’m Frederique and I’m a digital illustrator who now spends most time painting. But in a bigger sense I enjoy making things. I love knitting and sewing at the moment but if I had a shed I’d love to be woodworking too. One day. :))
I love your paintings! Been following you elsewhere for a while; it was a great honour to see you followed me here!
Lol I had this same reaction (: I totally agree with needing a workshop of sorts. Then I could have much more room in the office. You can’t beat the feeling making something physically with your hands. A great feeling lol
Hi everyone!! Happy to be here ~ My name is Novia, I’m a UX designer at Konrad Group, a design agency based in Toronto, Canada. Love nerding out about systems, design tokens, beautiful UX, and recently have been trying to improve my visual skills through more branding as well.
Outside of work, you’ll find me bouldering, exploring art galleries and new cafes, painting, playing guitar and singing - I love learning new tools and skills so you’ll probably find me nose-deep in a Framer or Spline tutorial too 🤣
Haha this sounds like me. If there’s something new to try to expand how I think about tooling or systems I usually dive in deep right away. Bouldering also sounds fun and exhilarating lol What are some things that you’ve found useful in learning better visual design?
For improving visual design, I’ve found immersing myself in as much design as possible has been amazing! A lot of this has been getting away from a screen and visiting a lot of my local galleries, and trying to be very intentional with observing the artist or designer’s craft
Then browsing tons of inspiring sites and main thing that’s helped : saving them somewhere to reference later!! I’m just now putting it into practice with some poster designs, but excited to bring this into my UX work as well
Great idea! Hi everyone! 👋🏻 I’m Stephen. I’m a designer living and working in Hudson Valley, NY. I’m currently working on civic tech products. I’ve also designed for Edtech, and graphic design for hospitality and sports.
I’m also a huge dungeons and dragons nerd and will talk about it for hours. If I’m not playing dnd I’m probably out biking, hiking in the Hudson Valley or visiting my family on the coast of Maine. 😊
Hello from down east Maine! 😄 love D&D too! I haven’t played in ages tho! Gosh I miss it!
Another Mainer! I’m from southern Maine. And yah the toughest part about dnd is finding people with the right schedule to actually play!
And yes! But like tbh the very last campaign I ended up playing was Strahd. I DM’d and it was an INCREDIBLE journey all the way through so if fate decides that ends up being my only chance to play with a group consistently, then so be it 😆🖤
CoS is great! It was the first campaign I played through during the early pandemic days. ✨
It really is!! I’ve got really fond memories of it and I always love hearing how other people played through it too! 😄
Aha! Cracked it! Hey fam 👋🏽! I’m Amy, a Brooklyn-based Product Designer working at Amp, a funky new live radio app by Amazon Music 🎙
I used to work in the music industry before pivoting to design (I was one of those “new pandemic new me” people 🥴), and now work at the intersection of the two, which is pretty neat!
In my free time I love to dabble with side projects (like creating an online community for underrepresented designers), traveling, and powerlifting 🏋🏽♀️ let’s be pals! ✨
This makes me want to get back into lifting but I hate my gym. NYC gyms are kinda awful.
Oof yes they leave much to be desired for sure, but some commercial ones get the job done (I go to Grindhouse), and the lifting ones are truly chefs kiss (so many in BK we can go to together when you’re ready to re-dip your toes 💪🏽)
Hey, Darian (and new + old friends)! I'm a marketing designer who recently left my senior design position of ten years at a university to jump into freelancing full-time. I'm a father of four, married to an elementary school teacher, and heavily active in the Webflow community.
In my spare time, I'm building artdept.club with @allworknosleep, working on my portfolio, playing with my kids, and building LEGO.
Right on! One of the kindest, most giving, and talented guys I know. We connected in Florida at State of Flow, and have been close ever since. Great to meet you, Noah!
That’s awesome! Almost went with him to that but just couldn’t swing it at the time. Good to meet you too!
Yo 👋🏻 I’m Rhys, a product designer at Acre Software. Acre’s a CRM for mortgage brokers, but I’m on the consumer side. I design the Client Portal which brokers send out to their clients to complete the fact find, upload and sign documents etc
Nice! I think often times people forget there’s a whole backside to the things that the clients get to see. Curious, do you enjoy the client side, or biz side more?
To be honest, I enjoy both, they’re both different ways of working. In my experience B2C is a bit more creatively freeing whereas B2B is more technical and problem solving? Depends what mood I’m in haha
I’m really good at technical design. I struggle a bit when it comes to making good consumer experiences. I don’t prefer the b2b side much though because I basically have no work I can put in my portfolio. lol I agree though, B2B is more of the problem solving which I enjoy
Such an awesome thread! Feels like Design Twitter in 2010. Hi I’m Christophe, and I’m head of product design at Plaid. Before that I’ve worked at Apple, Meta, Uber and Alto. I’m from France, live in California, and have 2 kids.
Ooh, I love Plaid. Sounds like a good round of experience through all that. Haha, I feel new communities like this are a great way for people to break out and meet some new people, so it’s good to break the ice :P Welcome!
Haha yeah, I’ve been around the block in tech. And yeah, agree, great to meet some new faces!
What a fun cross section with consumer commerce and ai. I’ve not cofounded anything, but I have run my own ventures and absolutely love working for myself most. What are some of the upsides to social impact projects and what were some of the hardest things with that?
Good plan! I’m Dan, currently a Design Advocate at zeroheight (a design system documentation tool). Before that I was front-end lead and then product owner for a design system I’m based in Manchester, UK. Have two awesome kids…and still making music on the side!
More than happy to chat nerdy stuff about design systems! I write stuff like this: zeroheight.com/blog/author/da… and this learninghub.zeroheight.com/hc/en-us/profi… and like this: smashingmagazine.com/author/dan-don…
Oh hey Dan! I’m a big fan of your writing. I follow a lot of the zeroheight blog. I used to do a lot of writing in the past but haven’t been able to get back into it. Also someone who loves talking nerdy design system stuff. Would love to have a chat sometime!
I can’t copy/paste the hex out of the app. I’m gonna guess it is the same color as your hat? Media conglomerates are fun, often there’s a lot of white-labeling behind the scenes and designing for multiple brands (: Do you like it so far? Or ever want to design other industries?
Hi everyone! I'm Baiel, Software Engineer, so like Web and mobile stuff. Really passionate about UI design, so that means that i'm huge fan of Rauno...
This Rauno? rauno.me/ I recently found an article here that was really helpful. I love when engineers are passionate about Ui because it makes design’s job much easier haha
Yeah, him! I'm so astonished by his work and level of knowledge required to do stuff like that 🤯 I recreated everything from his craft page and craftsmanship is top notch on his part
Hey!!! I’m Anna and I’m a product design consultant for an IBM subsidiary. I am super into product icons and at this moment doing a ton of learning around them. That’s the space I want to work myself into. I truly love the career path I chose.
Nice! Icons are a great niche, especially if they’re focused on designing them within an existing brand I’m working on a complex tool that rips icons out of figma and syncs them with GitHub. I feel like figma has its own quirks that I never had when designing them in illustrator
Oh that’s so sick! Ill be interested to see it when you’re done! I loveee figma for icons I can’t event look at illustrator and figure out what I’m supposed to look at or touch.
👋 I’m Matt, currently based in LA via Portland via SF. I’m a developer/designer and really love bringing delight and magic to products I work on. Was a design technologist at Medium for > 5 years, but for the past year have been doing freelance for smaller teams. Love 0->1.
Nice! I work with a bunch of DTs at eBay, they’re focused on a mix of tooling and product. Did you lean more towards one or the other? I would consider myself in that bucket as well, but I’m hired on as a designer
Oh nice! Did mostly product stuff, but my internal side hustle was building figma plugins and other random tooling for fun. 🙂 Sometimes acting solely as a designer, sometimes engineer, sometimes prototyper. I like the flexibility and variability of going between the roles
Hey! My name is Anton and I live in the Swedish countryside with my gf and our dog Taylor. I’ve been consulting for the past 13 yrs, currently for loom, summer health and Tractorbeam. I’m a product designer but most people know me for my writing, antonsten.com
Like every part hahah. I mean at least i don't know many people working in tech and living in county side. Consulting companies for 13 years is just mind blowing to me, like i'm 20 dude, so it's more than half my life and i can't imagine experience that comes from that many years
Living in the countryside is THE BEST. I had my first paid website gig in 1997 #grandpa 😂
Hey all, Rodrigo here 🙌 I am working as the head of design at LayerX, where I help my awesome team in crafting next-gen web3 products. I’ve got a love for fashion, cinema, cooking and making great connections with others within the design field! Glad to meet all of you 🤩
Hey Emily! I am currently getting into Korean food, I have been practicing the craft of making kimchi. The results have been great so far, but there’s still a lot more learn 🤓
hello!! my name is duaa and most recently i was a product designer at meta (looking for my next role if you're hiring 👀) outside of being a designer im currently into worldbuilding 🗺️ and im also teaching myself how to skateboard 🛹
Duaa! Good to see ya, sorry you’re still trying to find work. This job market has been brutal. Plus you’re a great and dedicated designer that it’s sad people haven’t bit on your work yet. 100% anyone seeing this should hire Duaa.
I was a big fan of the original Gowalla and psyched to see it back. Currently in beta/street team.
👋☺️ Name: Max Work: Freelance designer, currently building generative ai tools for biologists working on new proteins Hobbies: Running trails and eating tacos Location: Stockholm/Mallorca
